Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) :
Some children are given nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help them cope with their dental treatment. Nitrous oxide is given through a breathing mask that is placed over the child’s nose which allows them to relax without putting them to sleep. Nitrous only works well if the child breaths the air otherwise it's effectiveness is reduced tremendously. You’ll feel the effect of N2O almost immediately. Breathing in nitrous oxide makes you feel lightheaded, happy, and even giddy. This is why N2O is commonly known as “laughing gas.”
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide sedation as a very safe and effective technique to use for treating children with anxiety. When the procedure is over, the patient will receive pure oxygen for a few minutes through the mask. This helps remove any remaining nitrous oxide from your body. Recovering from nitrous oxide anesthesia is very fast. The effects of the gas will wear off around 5 minutes, and then the patient will feel back to normal. The gas is quickly eliminated from the body with the breathing of oxygen as a reversal agent sand it is also non-addictive.
Before to your appointment:
1) Please inform us of any change to your child’s health or medical condition.
2) Please inform us of any respiratory condition that makes breathing through the nose difficult for your child which may limit the effectiveness of the nitrous oxide sedation. -------------------------------------------
