Fluoride varnish
Fluoride varnish has practical advantages like ease of application, a non-offensive taste, and use of smaller amounts of fluoride than required for gel applications.
General indications:
- Patients who are moderate to high risk for caries on smooth surfaces
- Patients who are at high risk for caries on root surfaces
- Special patients groups:
- Institutionalized patients
- Orthodontic patients
- Patients undergoing head and neck radiation
- Patients with decreased salivary flow
- Children whose permanent molars should, but cannot be sealed
- No published evidence indicates that professionally applied fluoride varnish is a risk factor for enamel fluorosis,
General application of fluoride varnishes
- Must be professionally applied
- A thin layer is applied by a brush
- The entire tooth surface will be treated
- Varnish sets in a few seconds once in contact with moisture
- No rinsing, eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after application.
Products
- Sodium fluoride varnish - 5% (22,500 ppm) fluoride. E.g. = Cavity Shield, Duraflor, Duraphat
- difluorsilane varnish - 0.1% (1,000 ppm) fluoride. E.g. = Fluor Protector
